The United States is a fifteen-time Olympic champion in men’s basketball. Only four times the gold was not taken by the United States.
Spain started strong, had a long presence, but were 43-43 against the “Dream Team” at halftime. In the third quarter, the United States pulled out of Spain. The victory was 95-81 without any problem. For the Spaniards, this is the first men’s basketball Olympic Games since 2004 to win a medal: silver in 2008 and 2012 and bronze in 2016.
The United States enjoyed moderate production for games. As the play-offs in their country ended late, many star players wanted to rest. Some are missing due to a corona infection, some came to Tokyo the last time. Earlier in these matches, the American basketball players had already lost against France (76-83). This is the sixth loss for the Americans in many years at the event.
Slovenia had previously beaten Germany 94-70 to advance to the semi-finals. France beat Italy 84-75. Today is the last quarter of the Olympic basketball tournament: Australia-Argentina. The winner of this match will face the United States in the semi-finals.
The last time the United States won gold was in 2004. Then the title went to Argentina and the United States took the “only” bronze.
