It’s hard to believe Tyler Courtney hadn’t won a Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Hercules Tires. After all, “Sunshine” won the 2021 Tezos All-Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 title and the 2021 Ohio Sprint Speedweek Championship. Thursday’s excellent driving resume, leading all 30 laps of the Rick Ferkel Classic for a $6,000 salary at Waynesfield Raceway Park.
“It’s a big load on our shoulders. It’s been a tough two months here for the 7BC team, but my guys haven’t given up. They stayed behind me. This one means a lot more than some of the others,” Courtney said of her 12th career All-Star victory.
“I had a really good NOS Energy Drink car from start to finish tonight. It’s thanks to my guys. They have the hardest part of this speedweek deal working in the heat and the sun and busting my tail changing cars and engines to get me comfortable and get me back on the winning track,” Courtney added.
Justin Peck maintained his speedweek points lead with a strong second place finish.
Courtney took the lead going down the green with Skylar Gee, Brent Marks, Justin Peck and Hunter Schuerenberg in tow. A few early warnings kept the pitch closed. But a clear track gave Courtney a nearly two-second lead as Gee, Peck, Bill Balog and Marks battled for second place.
Courtney encountered heavy traffic on lap 12 and Peck, who eventually took second place from Gee on lap 13, began to close. A warning with 13 laps to go gave Courtney some fresh air again and he used it to pull away slightly as Peck, Marks, Balog and Schuerenberg continued to fight for second place.
Peck got really close to Courtney with four laps to go and as they raced towards the white flag, Courtney had Peck, Marks and Schuerenberg right on her bumper. Courtney held her line perfectly and took the win against Peck, Marks, Schuerenberg and Balog. The win puts Courtney in some pretty elite company, joining Bryan Clauson and Brad Sweet as the only drivers to ever win an Ohio Speedweek feature, an Indiana sprint week feature and an Indiana midget week feature.
Jamie Miller of Fremont, Ohio took the lead in the 305 sprint on lap nine and rode away for his fourth overall win of 2022.
“I asked Ryan (French, the owner of the car) if it was that nice. This thing was amazing,” Miller said beside his trusses Kenny Kalb, general contractor JLH, Roberts & Sons Contracting , Sonic Hauling, Queen of Clean, Sloppy’s Sports Café, Smitty’s Pizza, Crown Battery, Rohr Total Lawn Care, Schreinder Farms, Reedtown Tavern. , Fostoria Mod Shop, Flooring Outlaw, Phil Rister, Carpenter Creative backed machine.
Waynesfield will be back in action on Sunday July 3 for the Jack Hewitt Classic with the Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series and the FAST Winged Sprint Series.
