The race
This will be the third edition of BC39, a race honoring the legacy of late USAC champion Bryan Clauson.
The race will last 39 laps and pay the winner $ 15,000, the biggest payout in Midget races.
Brady Bacon won the inaugural race in 2018 and Zeb Wise took victory in 2019. The race did not take place in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Track
The Dirt Track at Indianapolis Motor Speedway is a quarter-mile oval that was built in 2018 before the first BC39. The track is located inside turn three of the historic Oval which hosts the Indianapolis 500 each year.
The format
The action kicks off Wednesday evening with 12 qualifying races. The qualifying races will be 10 laps each with the starting eleven determined by the âdraftâ of the qualifying race on Tuesday night at USAC headquarters. Each car will earn points based on the passes, which will determine the starting position in the qualifying races on Thursday night.
Thursday’s qualifying races will be 10 laps each with the first six starting positions reversed and the leading scorer from Wednesday’s qualifying races starting sixth.
The total points from qualifying races and qualifying races will be added to define the starting lineup, as well as transfers from B-Main, C-Main and before D-Main races. The first 16 in points will constitute the first eight rows of the main event.
The next six positions will be filled by the top six from B-Main. There will then be an option for provisionals for USAC and IMS.
The arrival of the 2019 Stoops Pursuit was unforgettable.
What is the Stoops pursuit?
The Stoops chase, held on Wednesday night, provided one of the craziest finishes we’ve ever seen in 2019.
The Stoops Pursuit is a 25-lap race divided into five-lap segments. The field will consist of 24 starters – the winners of the elimination races as well as the most points in each race are eligible, as well as the promoter’s options. The starting lineup is reversed by the fastest qualifying race time, with promoter’s options starting at the back. Every five laps the USAC will throw a competition flag and cars with a net loss in position will be called off the track with the last car.
The last car standing at the time of the last checkered flag will be the winner.
Scenarios
– Will Kyle Larson continue one of the most memorable years in motorsport history with a big win at Indianapolis Motor Speedway? The NASCAR Cup Series points leader just picked up a big win at the Knoxville Nationals.
– How will the recruits of BC39 behave on their first departure? A strong contingent of young guns, including Emerson Axsom, Daison Pursley and Buddy Kofoid, will make their BC39 debut this week.
– Will we see our first repeat BC39 winner? The two former race winners, Brady Bacon (2018) and Zeb Wise (2019), are entered for the race and are to be considered favorites.
– How will the rest of the NASCAR Cup Series talent fare? In addition to Larson, defending Cup champion Chase Elliott will compete in his first BC39 after making his Chili Bowl debut earlier this year. Former Daytona 500 winner Ryan Newman and current NASCAR Rookie of the Year leader Chase Briscoe will also compete.
– Can Tyler Courtney clinch a meaningful victory in his hometown of Indianapolis? At the wheel of Clauson Marshall Racing, it would be a special moment if “Sunshine” could win the race in memory of the late Bryan Clauson.
