Tavares won the Mann Cups in 1992 and 1993 with the MSL Brampton Excelsiors. From 1994 to 1996, he played three rounds with the Chiefs of the Six Nations. In 2003 he won with the Victoria Shamrocks (WLA) and in 2012 he landed his last with the Peterborough Lakers (OLA).
“The Great One” is a former lacrosse player. Wayne Gretzky played minor lacrosse and encouraged hockey players to play box lacrosse during the summer. Due to his love of the sport, he recently got involved with the NLL, as part-owner of an expansion team in Las Vegas which is expected to start playing in 2022.
The Ritchie Brothers
Brett and Nick Ritchie both played lacrosse. However, Brett had a more successful career. Nick quit playing lacrosse at the age of 15, but Brett was a top lacrosse prospect and played for the Orangeville Northmen Jr. team. A. Brett played on teams with current players from butt Dillon Ward and Jeremy Noble. Both players spoke about Brett Ritchie’s talent at lacrosse.

Brett Ritchie is known for his physical and uncompromising style of hockey and has recognized that the intensity of lacrosse has helped develop his style of hockey.
The Shanahan family
Hockey Hall of Fame member Brendan Shanahan has lacrosse experience, as does his brother Shaun, who has appeared in 40 NHL games. The Shanahans played minor lacrosse with their brothers Brian and Danny. Brendan even played junior box lacrosse with Etobicoke. Brian was the brothers’ most successful lacrosse player. He is a five-time Mann Cup champion, winning the trophy with Brampton and Six Nations (he was Tavares’ teammate for all five wins). Currently, he is an analyst for the National Lacrosse League (NLL). His daughter Brenna Shanahan plays NCAA field lacrosse for the University of Louisville.
Joe Nieuwendyk has had tons of success in his hockey career, including winning a Calder Trophy, winning the Stanley Cup three times and winning a Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP. His career in the NHL has been so spectacular that he was named to the NHL’s Top 100 list and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. This is not the only Sports Hall of Fame in which his name has been cemented, as he was a member of the back-to-back Minto Cup winner Whitby Warriors who were inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
