Wayne Rooney claimed Paul Scholes was ‘ahead’ of Liverpool legend and current Aston Villa head coach Steven Gerrard when he appeared on Monday Night Football yesterday.

Speaking to Jamie Carragher about former United midfielder Scholes, Derby County manager Rooney suggested he was an underrated player in Sir Alex Ferguson’s conquering squads. The former striker spoke candidly about his time at Old Trafford and recalled the memories he had in mind for the Red Devils.

Later in the show, the conversation with Carragher turned to the best midfielders of the Premier League era. But Rooney was keen to suggest that Scholes deserved to be well with a shout, alongside Gerrard and Frank Lampard.

He said: “Playing with Scholesy for a long time and what he did for you in the team, how he dictated the games for the team. I think he’s a bit underrated – certainly not with myself or Manchester United fans.”

Carragher then asked, “So Scholes in front of Gerrard?” Rooney replied, “Yeah.” Before a few awkward seconds pass. Predictably, this sparked a mass debate among fans and Liverpool supporters were quick to weigh in on Rooney’s comments. Here’s what a few had to say on Facebook…

Nigel Dove: Both are great, but anyone in their right mind knows Gerrard was better, more complete to begin with

Jay Williams: Scholes retired from international football with 66 caps, Gerrard had 114, that’s enough.

Luke Evans: Scholes couldn’t have done as well as Gerrard playing in a bad LFC team for years. Easy to be a superstar on Team USA back then.

Ian Rawsthon: I have to admit Scholes was a good player but he played with better players but for all his ability and he sometimes carried us Stevie g was a better player

Roger Awen: I evaluate the scholes very high from the top in PL, but he is not Gerard…

Jay Samson: Gerrard put together a team half of which weren’t good enough.. the redhead dwarf can’t say the same.. he played in big teams… so gerrard is the best player..
