Freedom Soccer coach resigns
Freedom Boys football coach Danny Miller has resigned from his post after two seasons, according to an email from FHS sporting director Antonio Lyerly on Wednesday. Miller was a non-teaching coach.
“We thank Danny for his two years of service to the program and wish him the best in his future endeavors,” Lyerly wrote in the email.
Miller guided the Patriots to eight wins this season as well as a return to the state playoffs for the first time since 2015. He was the third coach in the men’s program since longtime head coach of the boys and daughters, David Fletcher, retired in the summer of 2017, following Juan Pedro (2017) and Larry Taylor (2018-19). FHS is now looking for its fifth coach in the past seven seasons.
Youth football title matches on tap
The Burke County Recreation Department’s three youth football title games are scheduled for Saturday under the lights of Patton High.
The pee wee game opens the day at 5:30 p.m. and pits undefeated seed Valdese against Oak Hill. In a powerful game of mites, No. 1 seed Oak Hill takes on Mull at 6:45 p.m. And in the midget division, regular-season champion Mull faces Oak Hill as the Mustangs seek an unbeaten season as the Bulldogs play in the program’s third title. evening at 8 p.m.
