Hale shares a long history in the snowboard scene with The Dingo and Danny kass. They met in the early 2000s when Hale was competing – and turning heads – as a talented young rider in “rail jam” competitions, focused on snowboard tricks on the handrails. “I was probably eleven or twelve when I met you both,” Hale said on UNLEASHED, admitting to being stunned when he first met two-time Olympic medalist Kass.
Growing up in Big Bear, Hale cut his teeth as a young carnation in the epicenter of freestyle snowboarding at the time, southern california legendary Bear Mountain. The popular seaside resort was a favorite ground for the world’s most progressive snowboarders. Hale took in the latest tricks – as well as the importance of style – from a young age: “This is where everyone would go. We started this group called Midget Mafia, it was a group of nine year old kids running around in XL hoodies and baggie pants. It was pretty crazy, my mom let me out of the house dressed like this! Monster Energy’s Hale said on UNLEASHED.
It was in Big Bear that Hale cultivated her street-influenced approach to snowboarding. He developed his technical skills on the many ramps and features of the park that stretch across the mountainside in Big Bear. “It’s different from any other ski resort. I think it’s so good for snowboarding because everyone is so excited about snowboarding there,” Hale said of the iconic snowpark.
Hale’s progress accelerated when he joined the prestigious Burton Snowboards team and worked with a professional snowboarder. Jeremy jones as his mentor. “I think for my career it was such a great first step in learning the ins and outs of what has to happen in a successful snowboarding career. So I was very lucky to have this,” said Hale on UNLEASHED.
Over the following years, Hale built a successful journey as a paid professional that continues. Asked the secret to never ‘getting burned out’ on snowboarding after such a long time, Hale replied, ‘It’s a long time and kids burn out because it’s all they know their whole life. .. don’t like it, you will burn yourself. I always try to keep my head on my shoulders. And I love snowboarding. “
Hale has also had to deal with bumps in his career, including the loss of a major sponsor. But he managed to rebuild his reputation as a relevant professional runner and a driving force behind the sport’s progress. “These setbacks in your life are what shape you as a person. It’s how you shape your character,” said Hale, who also credits Monster Energy’s continued support for successfully bouncing back into the limelight.
Confirmation of its relevance came in 2020 when Hale and the filmmaker / editor that of Justin Meyer won the X Games silver medal in Real Snow 2020, the all-urban, all-video snowboarding contest hosted by ESPN’s World of X Games. “It was a chance to explain everything. Every time I do something, I think about it. Like, I’m going to do it and I’m going to give it my all. Because if you’re not fully in it, with your condition of mind, you’re not going to give it your all. So I did my best and I was rewarded. And I was so excited, “Hale said on UNLEASHED.
