SALISBURY—Gavan Boschele. a 14-year-old from Mooresville, led the final nine of 30 laps and won Tuesday’s Xtreme Outlaw Midget Series race debut at Millbridge Speedway.
Boschele raced in the Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsport, Curb Records, Bullet/Toyota #5 car, officially becoming the first winner in Xtreme Outlaw Midget Series history. The race included 35 cars.
This was Boschele’s second national midget victory (POWRi 2021). After starting from pole position, Boschele fell back to second and held second place for 21 laps while his KKM teammate Bryant Wiedeman of Colby, Kansas controlled the race.
Boschele took a margin of victory of 0.938 seconds in the $4,000 event up for grabs after snagging Wiedeman’s rear bumper and sending Yerf Dog #01 spinning in front of the field. Wiedeman and 10 or more other contestants had nowhere to go.
“I hate walking into Bryant there,” Boschele said. “I knew what he was doing the whole race and we hadn’t had any problems before, but I think he took a rut and that split second brought me to his rear bumper before I can’t react and have it. It’s a racing thing, but it still sucks. It’s pretty awesome to win that very first race, and especially to do it on my home track.
Zach Daum of Pocahontas, Illinoss finished second with a 12th-second charge. Another Mooresville native, Nick Drake, who finished on the podium, took the #55 car to third place.
Nick Hoffman of DIRTcar UMP Modified was fourth and Brent Crews fifth. Rounding out the top 10, Sam Johnson in sixth, Ethan Mitchell of Mooresville seventh, Carson Kvapil of Mooresville eighth, Dominic Gorden ninth and Brenham Crouch 10th.
