One of the oldest fields in the Boyertown Midget Baseball League, Mackey Field is the first field everyone sees when entering Boyertown Community Park.

With all of the park improvements, the League wanted to do its part to improve the community park and help build a better Boyertown. In conjunction with the Boyertown Lions Club and the Rotary Club, the League has been working on the design and plan for the Mackey Field Renovation Project for the past few years.

Beginning in 2018, the Mackey family and the Boyertown Midget Baseball League embarked on a campaign to transform Mackey Field at Boyertown Community Park into a first-class youth baseball stadium, the league recently announced in a statement.

“The project is now taking shape, with drawings showing the intended end result. Completion of this project will provide a high quality baseball environment for BMBL Senior Division teams and will also help Boyertown be able to host future local, state and regional tournaments for these age groups.

The field is named after Donald “Ducks” Mackey, a longtime supporter, coach and officer of the Boyertown Midget Baseball League. He introduced many teams and ideas that are in place today. Mackey was the first coach of the now Junior Legion Bear Cubs and the first coach of the 12-year-old All-star Bambinos, now called the Black Bears.

Throughout his life he was always involved in youth activities, not only baseball but also coaching for the Midget Mite and Biddy Basketball football teams. After his passing, the oldest Boyertown pool court was named in his honor.

“Over the years, many fields have been added and many improvements have been made, making Boyertown Park a premier baseball complex,” the league said in a statement.

A loyal lottery player, Mackey always told everyone, “The first thing I would do would be to build a stadium for the kids and then enjoy what was left, if any.”

“Now we can help build a fantastic stadium which will host many local, national and regional tournaments,” the League said.

The purpose of the renovations is to allow the league to use the land more efficiently and to provide the community with access to the land. On-field renovations include covered dugouts, expanded bullpen, expanded playing area behind home plate, conversion to grass infield, new scoreboard, addition of ADA and behind-the-home seating, among other improvements.

The infrastructure phase of the project is currently underway. The first fence and light posts have been removed. The new streetlights have been delivered and will be installed soon. Work on the concession stand and electrical upgrades are already underway.

The project is expected to be completed in the spring of 2023.

To fund the project, the League applied for several grants, received private donations, and worked on fundraising projects with the community, the Boyertown Lions Club, and the Rotary Club.

Community members are encouraged to contribute to the project. To make a donation, go to https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=RXXUBW2ZJ7BFN or send a check with Mackey Field in the memo line to: PO Box 34, Boyertown, PA 19512.

In addition, the community can buy bricks which will be used in the foundation of the project. For more information, visit the Boyertown Midget Baseball League website at https://www.boyertownmbl.com/Default.aspx?tabid=1021618#1097552.
