Gering’s Taydon Gorsuch and Yoder’s Haiden Thompson got off to strong starts at Gillette.

Gillette, Wyo. (KNEP) – Two local athletes are currently in the top five after a round at the National High School Finals Rodeo at Gillette.

Gering’s Taydon Gorsuch thanks to a 4.2 run Monday at Steer Wrestling currently second overall in the first round of the event. He will return to action on Friday for his second round.

Yoder native Haiden Thompson also has a strong start at Gillette. Defending national champion Goat Tying is looking solid again as she clocked a 7.06 run on her first lap on Tuesday. This total currently places her first in the general classification of the tour. She will return to action on Thursday for round two.

Thompson also competes in Breakaway, Reined Cow Horse and Team Roping. She would finish with an 8th place finish in both Reined Cow Horse and Breakaway to currently sit in the top 25 for the opening rounds.

Harrison’s Leif Meidell, thanks to a third-place finish on Monday, is currently 17th in the first round for Saddle Bronc.

Scottsbluff’s Tate Talkington, behind a sixth-place finish on Tuesday, is currently 28th in the opening round for Reined Cow Horse. He will return for his second round on Wednesday morning.

First-round action ends Wednesday morning. With round number two running through Saturday at Gillette.
