Three Cowichan Bulldogs football teams were in action at McAdam Park last weekend, and all three came out on the winning side.
On Sunday, the Midget Bulldogs won 29-0 over the Victoria Spartans and the Bantam Dogs beat the Nanaimo Seahawks 36-18, and on Saturday the Peewees defeated the Spartans 30-8.
The Midget team ended the regular season on a spectacular note, with dominating performances on both sides of the ball. The weather made it difficult for both teams: the wind and rain prevented an effective pass, so they went to their racing games on muddy terrain.
Still suffering from key injuries, the Bulldogs made some unexpected personal adjustments, with Jayden Strzok, Dillon Wilson and Logan Laver assisting Finn Shea with running back duties. Strzok and Wilson had long runs that led to Cowichan touchdowns. The Bulldogs managed to score a passing touchdown when quarterback Ben Wilson connected with receiver Jesse Kwasny.
In defense, the Bulldogs controlled the line of scrimmage with solid play from Strzok, Dillon Wilson, John Rostas-Kidd and Joe Swift. Shea led the game in tackles and Kwasny did a good job patrolling the high school.
The Midget Bulldogs will be off this weekend while they wait to see which Lower Mainland team they face in the first round of the playoffs.
The Bantam Bulldogs also had to deal with wet conditions, although the terrain was a bit better off because they played ahead of the Midgets.
Cowichan’s defense proved solid, with Brad MacRae recovering a fumble in Nanaimo’s second offensive play. In their second offensive play, the Bulldogs got a touchdown from Max Lang to take a quick lead. Nanaimo came back to tie him up. The Bulldogs started moving the ball early in the second quarter, then instituted their new halo attack, where they took out the receivers and put the ball in the hands of the greats. Bringing the ball over to the four-yard line, they borrowed Refrigerator Perry’s play from the 85 Chicago Bears and put Seb Tait in the full back to run on his very first touchdown.
âEvery O lineman’s dream,â commented Bantam head coach Opie Williams.
Returning to the red zone shortly after, the Bulldogs restored their regular offense and Aiden Jeffries scored his first touchdown of the year with the extra point from Landon Locke. In their own camp at the end of the second quarter, the offensive line convinced Williams to bet on the third down. Not only did they get the first down, but Lang broke through and ran for 86 yards to score. The snap on the extra point was bad, but Maertz rushed over and threw at MacRae for the two-point convert. The Seahawks picked up one, but the Bulldogs still went at halftime leading 28-12.
The Bulldogs controlled the ball for most of the third quarter, starting a practice on their own five-yard line and marching to the end of the Seahawks. They started the fourth on Nanaimo’s two-yard line, and Tait took over for his second touchdown, with Maertz running into the two-run convert. Nanaimo had one more score before time runs out.
The Roosters secured first place in the Island Division and will host a playoff game. They will host Comox on Ladysmith turf this Sunday at 3pm.
The Peewee Bulldogs saw their attack really click on the Spartans. The team got huge points, with quarterback Mica Kendrick and running back Brolin. Kendrick started the passing game, with receptions and runs from Atlas Ryder, Cole Tokarek and Aylin Canning.
âThe offensive line provided great pass protection and opened some holes for our backs to cross,â commented coach Trystan Ryder.
In defense, tight end Atlas Ryder made several tackles for lost yards, while cornerbacks Harrison Plaxton and Alexander Erickson ended the Spartans’ outside play.
âThe squad has really grown stronger over the past few weeks and all of the hard work in training is paying off,â said coach Ryder. âWe look forward to our next game against the Oceanside Lions and continue to improve. “
The Pewee Bulldogs will visit Oceanside on Sunday.
