The Wetaskiwin Warriors women’s soccer teams ended their first post-pandemic season with big wins.
The junior and senior women’s team is comprised of girls ages 13-18 with athletes traveling from all over Wetaskiwin County and other central Alberta towns, including Ponoka, to play for the Warriors.
Last weekend, Saturday June 4th, the senior women’s team won and won the Midget Girls Tier 1 Division Championship trophy. The same weekend, the junior women’s team won against teams from Airdrie and Calgary.
Both teams’ head coach Eric Weremey said this season was the culmination of all the years of hard work.
“They are incredible athletes,” he said.
“I would put them against the boys anytime.”
He says watching the girls come together and bonding as a team has been the highlight of the season and he knows it helped them win their championship.
Raelyn Marceau, a senior member of the team, affectionately nicknamed “bulldog” by her teammates, says she is sad that this is her last year with the Warriors. Surrounded by her teammates in a huge huddle, she explained that they have all become so close this year.
“They are my family, they always will be,” she said.
